In Arctic waters efficient loading of oil to a tanker
is a challenge. At present the experience is meagre compared to approach
and mooring of large open water tankers to offshore platforms. Most relevant
loading experience is from small vessels moored in the lee of the arctic
offshore platforms. With ice present the ice movement causes additional
loads on the tanker. The paper presents the major results from a number
of model-scale tests with a subsea loading system performed in the Hamburgische
Schiffbau-Versuchsanstalt GmbH (HSVA) ice tank in Hamburg. The modelled
ship had a conventional ice-breaking bow and a length between perpendiculars
of 235 m. The testing was performed at a scale of 1:36 with physical environmental
parameters from the Eastern Barents Sea in mind.
